A Bengaluru-based social activist has filed a formal complaint against Indian cricketer and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Virat Kohli, following a deadly stampede that occurred during the team’s first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) title celebration. The incident, which unfolded outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, resulted in 11 deaths and left more than 50 others injured.
The complaint was submitted by HM Venkatesh from Shivamogga district at Cubbon Park Police Station, situated close to the stadium. The local police stated the grievance would be reviewed under an already existing FIR and investigated accordingly.
The tragedy occurred on Wednesday when the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) organized a felicitation event for RCB’s historic win. Initial government reports reveal that a makeshift platform built over a stormwater drain collapsed under crowd pressure, sparking panic and chaos.
Victims ranged from teenagers to young adults aged 13 to 35. Allegedly, the event was held despite police advice to postpone it for safety and logistical planning. Authorities also noted that RCB’s management failed to coordinate with police before promoting the event online, which gained viral traction.
As the situation escalated, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda was suspended for negligence, and Seemanth Kumar Singh was appointed in his place.
A criminal case has been registered against RCB, KSCA, and event partner DNA Entertainment Pvt Ltd. Marketing head Nikhil Sosale was arrested at Bengaluru Airport, while three DNA Entertainment staff were detained. Sosale has approached Karnataka High Court, calling the arrest unlawful.
