Bengaluru: Six-time MLA and senior BJP MLA Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri was unanimously elected as the speaker of Karnataka assembly on Wednesday, July 31. He had filed his nomination for the post on Tuesday.
The post fell vacant after KR Ramesh Kumar resigned as the Speaker of the Assembly, shortly after the BJP government won the trust vote, earlier this week.
Kageri, who represents the Sirsi constituency in Uttara Kannada was the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education in the BJP government and was the only candidate to file his nomination for the post on Tuesday. Opposition parties did not field any candidate as they knew that the BJP candidate will win considering the fact that the BJP has a majority in the house.
“We received only one nomination that was of Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri,” an official in the Karnataka assembly secretariat told PTI.
