Bengaluru: The programme organised by the Election Commission on Sunday to register fresh voters has been termed as a success with over 6.45 lakh applications received across 30 districts in the State.

With the last date for registering names in the electoral rolls being April 14, the commission had organised the programme to include names to make elections more inclusive. It was especially meant for persons with disabilities, women and primitive tribes. Sources said the registration of names at the polling stations received a response that was more than expected.

Organised across 40,000 polling booths in the State, the programme had booth level officials to help registration of names and also correction of errors.

Sources said that apart from receiving 4.9 lakh fresh applications, the commission has also received over 1.55 applications for rectifications of name, age and address among other things. However, the quick registration programme had its own issues with many eligible voters returning disappointed after finding some of the polling booths closed.
