Bengaluru continues to draw global investors, a topic often discussed in both professional meetings and casual conversations. While the city’s mild climate and abundant talent pool are commonly cited reasons, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s words, spoken 18 years ago, offer a more heartfelt explanation. Singh described the city’s residents as “gracious, gentle, talented, and forward-looking,” praising their warm hospitality.
In June 2006, Singh marked the foundation of a 10-lane road to Electronics City, calling Bengaluru a ‘global brand.’ He highlighted that the city was known worldwide more than India itself, attributing much of this success to the kindness and openness of its people. Singh advised locals to cherish and preserve this hospitality, as it was one of Bengaluru’s greatest assets.
Singh’s tenure saw Bengaluru thrive as an entrepreneurial hub, thanks to economic reforms he championed. His support helped launch vital infrastructure projects that fueled the city’s growth, including the 10-lane road to Electronics City, upgrades to highways, and the Namma Metro. Singh also laid the foundation for Kempegowda International Airport in 2008, and his initiatives led to an upgraded fleet of buses in the city, improving its public transport.
These developments, combined with Bengaluru’s unique spirit, paved the way for it to become India’s startup capital.
