Bengaluru– A 27-year-old woman, identified as Megha K from Kadur in Chikkamagaluru, tragically died after inhaling toxic fumes from a gas geyser in a bathroom with poor ventilation at a residence in Nelamangala on Thursday evening — her birthday.
Megha, who worked remotely for a Bengaluru-based private firm, had travelled to the city to visit her fiancé, Satish, a garment worker residing with his mother, Sunanda, in NNT Layout. The couple was scheduled to marry soon.
According to police, Megha had arrived Monday night and spent the following days shopping with Sunanda. She was supposed to return home Thursday evening. After Satish and Sunanda left for work post-lunch that day, Megha went for a shower, turning on the gas geyser.
When Sunanda returned around 8 PM, she found the main door locked from inside. With help from neighbors, they broke open both the main door and the bathroom door, only to discover Megha unresponsive inside.
“There was no ventilation in the bathroom — a critical safety requirement when using gas geysers,” said an investigating officer. Police suspect carbon monoxide inhalation as the cause of death and have launched a formal inquiry.
The incident serves as a grim reminder about the hidden dangers of gas geysers, particularly when used in confined, poorly ventilated spaces.
