Bengaluru: In a gruesome incident, an 18-year-old woman has been killed by her brother-in-law in Subramanyapura police station limits on Sunday. The woman had recently returned to her maternal home due to some domestic issues with her husband.

The police have identified the deceased as Pavitra, a resident of Naidu Layout and a native of Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh. The accused has been identified as Jagadish (30).

According to the police, Pavittra’s neighbours had alerted police about the incident. It was said Pavitra’s family members had made arrangements for her funeral and they told neighbors that Pavitra had died of some illness but the neighbours, who knew that Pavitra was not suffering from any illness till February 24, suspected something fishy and alerted the police.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) SD Sharanappa said Jagadish has strangulated Pavitra to death. “The accused has been arrested and the investigation is on,’’ Sharanappa said.

Pavitra was younger daughter to couple Chennaiah and Lakshmamma couple. Jagadish is married to Pavitra’s sister Bhuvaneshwari few years ago and is staying with his in-laws.

According to police sources, Pavitra’s parents and Jagadish had compelled her to marry a person of their choice a year ago. Ever since she got married, she was not comfortable living with her husband and often returned to her parents.

The police sources said a few months ago she came back to her parents and did not go back to her husband despite her parents and Jagadish tried to convince her to stay with her husband. The reason Pavitra was refusing to live with her husband was she was in love with another man. It made Jagadish angry.
Sharanappa said, “Jagadish has tried to persuade Pavitra to stop meeting her boyfriend and live with her husband but she did not listen. Hence, Jagadish told his in-laws that he will take Pavitra to Vellor and get some black magic done on her so that she lives with her husband. He strangulated Pavitra to death when she was sleeping on February 25 and told his in-laws that she was suffering from some illness. Believing his version, Pavitra’s parents took her to Chittoor in a car but they came to know that Pavitra is no more after reaching Vellore. While returning to city on Sunday, Jagadish threatened Pavitra’s parents not to report to police about Pavitra’s death. He threatened to ruin their elder daughter’s future. Fearing the imminent threat to their elder daughter, the parents decided not to reveal the cause of Pavitra’s death.’’

However, Jagadish plan fell flat with neighbours alerting police who swung into action questioned the family members and arrested Jagadish. The accused has confessed to police that he killed Pavitra by assuming that he would get whole property as his in-laws have no son. Pavitra’s parents own a house in Bengaluru and one acre land at their native. They wanted to distribute the property equally to both their daughters. Pavitra’s body has been handed over to the family after post mortem.
