Women farmers to shine at Sankranti edition of Ragi Kana, Bengaluru

This year’s Sankranti edition of Ragi Kana, a rural market held every Sunday near Bannerghatta Road, will highlight the contributions of women farmers in Karnataka. On January 12, 18 women farmers will take center stage to share their expertise. These include Rajamma from Tondahalli, known for preserving native seeds, Thimmakka from Kudur, an expert in foraging greens, Geethamma from Kotturu, a dryland farming specialist, and Sharadamma from Kandugallu, who excels in millet and pulse cultivation. These women will also sell their produce, including grains like togari, avarekai, groundnuts, turmeric roots, and sugarcane.

The event will also feature 61 vendors selling organic produce and handloom products. As part of the Sankranti celebrations, huggi, both sweet and savory, will be prepared using the produce brought by these farmers. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ragi Kana, Gottigere, off Bannerghatta Road. Entry is free.

In another organic farming-related event, the 48th edition of Oota from your Thota (OFYT) will take place on January 12. This quarterly event focuses on organic gardening, and nearly 1 lakh Bengalureans have taken up terrace gardening since its inception 12 years ago. The event will feature 40 stalls offering gardening tools, organic produce, and snacks. Workshops on plant propagation, composting, and vegetable cultivation will be conducted throughout the day.
