Traffic experts have noted that zebra crossings can reduce pedestrian accidents by 30%. However, a recent reality check by Metrolife on various busy roads and intersections in Bengaluru reveals significant issues with existing zebra crossings. Here are the findings:
- Hebbal: There are no zebra crossings near the bus stop, making it difficult for pedestrians to cross due to speeding vehicles. Residents express concern about safety when crossing the road.
- Mahalakshmi Metro Station: The zebra crossing at the station’s entrance is fading, and vehicles often halt on the crossing, posing challenges for pedestrians. Yuktha S., a daily commuter, highlights the difficulties of crossing at night when buses also stop on the crossing.
- Jayanagar: The Jayanagar 3rd Block Main Road lacks a zebra crossing at the traffic signal. A local shop owner states that the absence of proper markings is critical and needs immediate action from BBMP.
- Yeshwanthpur: The zebra crossing paint is faded and has been erased in some areas due to pothole repairs, complicating crossings during peak hours, as noted by resident Sathya Murthi.
- Majestic: Surrounding the Kempegowda Bus Station, the zebra crossings are fading, creating unsafe conditions for pedestrians, with vehicles refusing to slow down.
- Rajajinagar: In this area with many schools and colleges, the lack of zebra crossings combined with heavy traffic poses risks for students crossing the roads to reach bus stops.
Additionally, areas such as Koramangala, HSR Layout, Mission Road, and Brigade Road also have faded zebra markings.
Officials’ Response: Anucheth M N, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), stated that a monthly survey is conducted to identify areas needing attention, and necessary work is being sanctioned. Mohammed Ajmal Ariff, executive engineer of BBMP, mentioned plans to discuss the issue with traffic police and initiate repairs based on their input. B S Prahlad from BBMP’s road and infrastructure department emphasized their commitment to responding promptly to citizen complaints regarding zebra crossings.
