Bengaluru: Zomato has launched District, its third consumer-facing app, designed to cater to the growing demand for live events, dining, and entertainment bookings. The app is now available for iOS and Android users.

Beyond Food Delivery

The launch of District signifies Zomato’s strategic move beyond its established food delivery platform and quick commerce venture, Blinkit. The app consolidates multiple consumer services such as dining out, booking tickets for movies, live events, sports, shopping, and even staycations into a single platform.

Competing in the Entertainment Market

District enters a competitive space dominated by BookMyShow, which holds 60% of India’s online movie ticketing market share. To strengthen its foothold, Zomato had previously acquired Paytm’s entertainment business, Insider, for ₹2,048 crore in August 2024.

Aimed at Expansion

Zomato’s latest initiative reflects its strategy to diversify and expand its consumer offerings. The launch comes amidst plans for a $1 billion qualified institutional placement (QIP) in December, where Morgan Stanley is reportedly playing a key role.

User Features

Currently, the District app allows users to:

  • Book movie tickets
  • Access live event bookings
Future updates are expected to include sports ticketing, shopping experiences, and staycation options, making District a one-stop destination for entertainment and lifestyle needs.

Conclusion

With District, Zomato aims to redefine the consumer experience by merging multiple services into a unified app. This move could pose a significant challenge to existing competitors in the entertainment and dining sectors, as the platform capitalises on its established brand and extensive user base.
