New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), selecting Ahmedabad as the ideal venue due to its world-class sports infrastructure and strong sporting culture.
Ahmedabad named as “ideal host city”
The decision comes shortly after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) endorsed the proposal earlier this year. In a statement, the Press Information Bureau confirmed that the government has authorised the submission of India’s bid and the signing of the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA), along with guarantees from relevant ministries and financial support for Gujarat if the bid succeeds.
“Ahmedabad is an ideal host city offering world-class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a passionate sporting culture. Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world, has already proven its capability by successfully hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final,” the release stated.
The deadline to submit the bid is August 31, and the IOA is expected to finalise the process within 48 hours. The host country for the 2030 CWG will be announced at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow this November.
Boost for India’s global sporting ambitions
India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi. This new bid aligns with the country’s larger ambition of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad also being the frontrunner for that event. To support these aspirations, Gujarat is upgrading its sports infrastructure, including the under-construction Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will feature an aquatics centre, a football stadium, and multiple indoor sports arenas.
The withdrawal of Canada from the bidding process due to financial constraints has further strengthened India’s chances of securing the 2030 Games.
Economic, social and cultural benefits
The government believes that hosting the CWG will create a transformative impact beyond sports. “The Games will boost tourism, create lakhs of jobs, and provide immense opportunities in sports science, event management, logistics, broadcasting, IT, and public relations,” the statement read.
Officials also highlighted the potential for the event to inspire young athletes across the nation and foster a sense of national pride. “It will be a shared national experience that will unite India, encouraging greater participation in sports at all levels,” the release added.
Conclusion
With the Cabinet’s approval and Ahmedabad’s growing sports ecosystem, India’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games marks a significant step in the country’s sporting journey. If successful, it could serve as a springboard for India’s Olympic aspirations and solidify its position as a global sports hub.
