Centre Contemplating Merger of Konkan Railways with Indian Railways: Minister V Somanna
Minister of State for Railways, V Somanna, has revealed that the Central Government is contemplating the merger of Konkan Railways with Indian Railways in a bid to improve the quality of services provided to commuters across states. Speaking at a programme in Hubballi on Monday night, Somanna highlighted the strategic importance of the Konkan Railway network and the benefits of its potential integration with the Indian Railways.
Vande Bharat Train Welcomed in Hubballi
The event was organised to welcome the Vande Bharat Express, which now connects Pune and Hubballi, marking another significant development for rail commuters in the region. The Minister stressed the government’s commitment to improving railway services and infrastructure across Karnataka and neighbouring states.
Konkan Railway’s Vast Network
Somanna pointed out that the Konkan Railways spans a significant distance, connecting Kerala to Maharashtra, with a 742-kilometre stretch running through Karnataka alone. Despite the extensive network, he emphasised that the current services were not sufficient to meet growing passenger demands, hence the move towards a merger with Indian Railways was being explored.
“We need more and better services for commuters,” Somanna stated, while underscoring the importance of integrating the railway systems to enhance efficiency.
Talks with States in Progres
According to Somanna, discussions have already been held with the Karnataka, Kerala, and Goa governments regarding the proposed merger. He mentioned that convincing Maharashtrato support the plan was a key priority before initiating the formal merger process.
“Once we have the backing of Maharashtra, the merger process will be initiated,” he added, indicating that the Centre is eager to move forward with the plan, which is expected to bring about significant changes in how the Konkan Railway operates and serves the public.
No Cooperation from State Government
In a surprising remark, Somanna stated that while earlier railway projects in the state had been implemented with 50% contributions from the state government, there was now “no cooperation from the state government.” As a result, the Central Government has taken the decision to fully fund all pending railway projects in Karnataka.
“The Centre will now bear all the costs to ensure these projects are completed,” Somanna asserted, further promising that many of these long-pending initiatives would soon be realised.
Belagavi-Dharwad Railway Line on the Horizon
Somanna also provided updates on the long-awaited Belagavi-Dharwad direct railway line, a project that has been eagerly anticipated by local residents. He assured the public that the railway line would be completed within the next three years, significantly improving connectivity between the two regions.
“We will complete land acquisition for the project within the next three months, and it will then be handed over to Railways,” Somanna said, assuring swift action on this long-delayed project. The Minister’s announcement has sparked optimism that regional transportation infrastructure will see a much-needed boost.
Improved Rail Connectivity for Karnataka
The potential merger of Konkan Railways with Indian Railways is expected to streamline operations, reduce administrative hurdles, and enhance passenger experiences across the vast network. With the Vande Bharat Express already extending its reach to Hubballi and plans for future infrastructure projects, the railway sector in Karnataka and surrounding regions appears poised for major improvements in the coming years.
