Chamarajanagara: The District Administration has launched an eye donation abhiyan following demise of actor Puneet Rajkumar. Puneeth, a native of Gajanur in Tamilnadu which shares border with Chamarajanagara.
The District Administration has planned to register 10000 eye donors before the end of this month and subsequently raise the number of eye donors to 46000 as the actor died at the age of 46.
Speaking to News Karnataka on Thursday November 11 Deputy Commissioner Dr. M. R. Ravi
told that he has held a meeting with all the officers of the district, and has instructed them to identify a site for construction of eye hospital in the district. He said the eye hospital will be named after Puneeth. He said the hospital would have an eye bank too.
The District Administration has already started an awareness programmes in all the villages, schools and colleges to convince people about importantance of donating eyes. The programme is being conducted in association with various pro-people organisations, Red Cross and various departments. As per records there are 3500 people with no vision in the eyes in the district.Puneeth was also the ambassador of Tourism Department of the district which has been labeled as one of the backward districts of the State. The Tourism Department attracted large number of tourists after Puneeth became the ambassador.
