The Chamarajanagar Superintendent of Police has introduced a health-focused trekking initiative to improve the physical fitness of police personnel. The program, aimed at combating obesity and related health issues, was launched two months ago on an experimental basis and has already shown positive results.
Officers and staff from six police stations in the city have been trekking to the renowned Karivaradaraja Hill. Superintendent of Police B.T. Kavitha shared that many participants have lost between 2 to 5 kgs, with some also managing to control other health conditions such as diabetes and blood pressure.
The initiative came in response to concerns about the physical health of police personnel, who often face stress and struggle to find time for their well-being amidst work and family pressures. Many had complained about weight issues, which were affecting their overall efficiency.
To ensure minimal disruption to duties, the trekking schedule is arranged in advance. Staff from each station (except those on emergency duty) participate on a rotating basis once a week. The session starts at 6 am and lasts until 9 am, covering a minimum distance of 5 kilometers. In addition to trekking, participants engage in meditation and yoga after reaching the hilltop.
Around 20-25 police personnel join the trek each day, although the program is voluntary. Officers with health concerns, such as knee pain, are exempt from the activity.
