In a shocking incident in Chamarajanagar district, five tigers were discovered dead, prompting the Forest Department to detain four cattle herders from Gajanur village in Hanur taluk for questioning.
Officials reported that the carcass of a cow was recovered at the same site where the tiger bodies were found. Authorities suspect the cattle herders may have applied pesticides to the cow carcass, possibly leading to the tigers’ deaths after consuming it.
Forest Department teams are working to confirm the identity of the dead cow and determine whether it belonged to any of the detained individuals. Investigators are also examining whether the deaths were caused by deliberate poisoning or the involvement of organized poachers.
According to preliminary findings, the victims included four female tigers and one male tiger. Officials noted that these big cats were in the process of establishing their territories in the area over the past few months.
Local residents and wildlife authorities have expressed anger and concern over the loss, which marks a serious setback for conservation efforts in the region. The deaths have sparked fears about increased conflict between wildlife and livestock owners living near protected areas.
Forest officials have assured that a detailed investigation is underway. Forensic teams are collecting samples from the site to confirm the exact cause of death and whether any banned toxic substances were used. Further action will depend on the lab reports and interrogation of the suspects.
