Chamarajanagar district witnessed two back-to-back tiger attacks under the Bedaguli range of Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple (BRT) Tiger Reserve, leaving one woman dead and a man critically injured. Forest officials launched a rapid operation and captured the tiger within hours.
The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Rangamma from Beduguli tribal settlement. She was attacked on Tuesday morning while stepping out for a nature call. The previous night, Ravi, a resident of Ramaiahana hamlet, was mauled while walking back to his village. Locals managed to chase the tiger away after hearing his cries.
Ravi, who sustained severe head injuries, is receiving treatment at the Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences.
Deputy Conservator of Forests B S Sripathy confirmed that the same tiger was involved in both attacks. In response, a special capture operation was launched and the animal was safely rescued.
Forest and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre expressed condolences to Rangamma’s family and announced full medical support for Ravi. He instructed officials to cover all treatment costs and disburse compensation to the deceased’s next of kin. He also urged residents in tribal hamlets to remain alert, particularly during night hours.
The attacks have sparked fresh concerns about human-wildlife conflict in buffer zones of tiger reserves.
