In a heartbreaking incident from Chintamani taluk in Chikkaballapur district, a six-year-old boy named Yeshwant suffered permanent blindness in one eye after a stick thrown by a schoolteacher struck him in the classroom. The incident, which occurred on March 6 last year at a government school, came to light after months of medical consultations and community outrage.
Police stated that the teacher had thrown the stick to discipline the class, but it hit Yeshwant directly in the eye. At the time, the boy was in Class 1. Initially unaware of the seriousness of the injury, the parents later rushed him to various hospitals as his condition worsened. Despite undergoing two surgeries at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, the damage proved irreversible. A final diagnosis at a private hospital confirmed the complete loss of vision in his right eye.
The incident sparked public anger, leading to a protest outside Batlahalli police station by the boy’s family and local residents. This resulted in a case being registered against the accused teacher and five others, including a block education officer, under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice Act for assault and negligence.
A senior police officer confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway and legal action will follow.
