Chikkamagaluru, popularly known as the Land of Coffee, will soon have its own milk producers’ union, following the bifurcation of the Hassan District Milk Producers’ Union. This announcement was made by Minister for Cooperation KN Rajanna during the golden jubilee celebrations of the Primary Agricultural Credit Society (PACS) in Sangameshwarpet.
Rajanna stated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved the formation of the new milk union, which will also include Arasikere taluk from Hassan district. Presently, the Hassan Milk Union manages dairy operations in Chikkamagaluru. The new union is expected to boost the local dairy economy and improve support for milk producers in the region.
He acknowledged that while dairy farming ensures regular income for farmers, they face challenges due to low milk prices in Karnataka compared to other states. Recent price hikes were aimed at helping farmers, especially in the face of rising production costs.
Rajanna emphasized the need for farmers to have better control over pricing to ensure economic stability. He also highlighted that even coffee planters had faced financial difficulties, though recent improvements in coffee prices have brought some relief.
Suggesting diversification, he encouraged cooperatives to venture into non-agricultural lending and offer low-interest loans, enhancing local economic resilience. He stressed keeping politics out of cooperatives, saying it is vital for maintaining the integrity of the system.
Sringeri MLA TD Rajegowda, who was also present, praised the cooperative movement for empowering farmers and contributing to rural development. Several cooperative societies were felicitated for their service at the event.
