A flash protest erupted in Kalmaradi on Saturday after Congress worker and panchayat member Ganesh Gowda, 38, was hacked to death late Friday night. The incident has heightened tensions in the region, prompting swift political reactions and an intensified police investigation.

Murder on Kalmaradi Mutt Road

Gowda was travelling alone in his car on Kalmaradi Mutt Road when he was attacked and fatally assaulted with sharp weapons. Police said the assailants intercepted his vehicle and fled soon after the assault.

SP Vikram Amathe confirmed that four accused have been detained. Two of them, identified as Mithun and Sanjay, have been hospitalised with injuries. “Four teams are working to crack the case,” Amathe said, adding that preliminary findings point to a violent confrontation that escalated fatally.

Clash over Datta Jayanti banner

According to sources, a dispute reportedly broke out earlier on Friday between Gowda and a group of individuals over the removal of a banner put up for Datta Jayanti. The altercation is believed to have heightened tensions, eventually culminating in the attack.
Following the clash, Congress workers had staged a brief protest in the area, demanding action and greater protection for party members.

Political leaders visit bereaved family

District in-charge minister K. J. George visited Gowda’s family on Saturday and assured them of a thorough investigation. “A probe is under way and the guilty will be brought to justice,” he said.

MLA K. S. Anand alleged that eight people were involved in what appeared to be a planned attack. He criticised the police for failing to prevent escalating clashes between the two groups earlier in the day, arguing that timely intervention could have averted the tragedy.

Investigation ongoing

Police teams are now examining CCTV footage from the vicinity, mapping mobile-tower locations and questioning several individuals connected to the banner dispute. Forensic experts have also inspected the crime scene and Gowda’s vehicle.

Officers said multiple motives are being examined, including political rivalry, personal enmity and escalation from the earlier confrontation. Security has been tightened in the area to prevent further unrest.

Flash protest and community reaction

Congress workers gathered in a flash protest shortly after news of Gowda’s death spread, condemning the violence and demanding immediate arrests. Local leaders called for peace, urging supporters to allow the investigation to progress.

Residents of Kalmaradi expressed shock at the brutal killing, noting that Gowda was widely known in the community for his grassroots involvement as a panchayat member. Many urged authorities to strengthen preventive policing during festival-related tensions.

As the probe continues, police said further arrests are likely in the coming days.
