CHIKKAMAGALURU: The Karnataka State Women’s Commission chairperson, Nagalakshmi Choudhary, praised the district administration and law enforcement agencies for their efforts in significantly reducing crimes against women in Chikkamagaluru. On a two-day visit to the district, she revealed that rape cases fell from 35 in 2019–20 to just 5 in 2024–25, with only 3 reported between January and April this year.
Calling this a “noteworthy decline in case severity,” she congratulated the district administration, police, and women and child welfare department, and expressed hope that the number would eventually drop to zero. She also mentioned that a detailed report on all preventive measures taken by authorities would be collected.
Choudhary inspected the Sakhi One Stop Center at Rukminiyamma Mother and Child Hospital in the city, which she termed a crucial support hub for survivors of sexual harassment and domestic violence. The center provides seven-day shelter, legal aid, medical care, and police assistance under the Nirbhaya scheme.
However, she raised concern over an unclean water tank at the center and directed officials to clean it within two to three days and submit a report. Officials promised resolution within four days.
She also visited several Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and interacted with healthcare staff. Medical professionals including Dr Mohankumar, Dr Chandrashekhar Salimath, Dr Rohit, Dr Pandurangaiah, and Dr Konappa were present during her inspection.
