Elephants terrorize school kids, villager’s quick action prevents disaster
A tense situation unfolded in Kusuburu village, part of Muttinakoppe Gram Panchayat, when two young schoolchildren were chased by wild elephants near Doddanatale on Wednesday evening.
The children, students of a private school in nearby Muttinakoppa, had just alighted from an auto-rickshaw and were walking towards their home when they suddenly found themselves face-to-face with a herd of elephants. As panic set in, Samayat, a vigilant local resident passing by, noticed the scene and wasted no time in rushing to the children’s aid. Thanks to his timely intervention, both kids were escorted to safety, narrowly avoiding what could have been a tragic encounter.
The incident rattled villagers, who immediately reported the matter to the forest authorities. Taking swift action, the forest department, along with the Elephant Task Force, launched a dedicated operation to push the elephants back into the wilderness and away from human settlements.
This episode once again sheds light on the growing instances of human-animal conflict in the region. Residents have long been living under the shadow of fear as elephant sightings become more frequent, often leading to dangerous confrontations.
Local communities continue to urge authorities to introduce stronger measures to prevent such life-threatening situations, including better surveillance and fencing.
The event also serves as a reminder of how quick-thinking locals can play a crucial role in saving lives amidst escalating wildlife encounters.
