A 56-year-old farmer, Umesh, lost his life after being trampled by a wild elephant near Keregadde, Seethapura, in Narasimharajapura (N R Pura) taluk, Chikkamagaluru.

The elephant, sighted in the Kesave and Nagaramakki areas over four days, reappeared on Saturday. Villagers gathered to drive it into the forest using firecrackers. While the animal moved away, Umesh stayed back and was later found trampled.

Police and forest officials visited the site, but villagers criticized the forest department for failing to relocate or capture the elephant despite repeated sightings.
