In the Mundgod-Sirsi forest region of Uttara Kannada district, the Forest Research Department of Sirsi planted 2,780 Calamus Nagbettai saplings over 10 hectares last year. This unique variety of climbing palm, renowned for its use in crafting premium furniture, is now receiving special care to ensure its survival.
To shield the young saplings from the harsh sunlight, forest officials have set up protective green nets over all the plants. While sunlight is essential for photosynthesis, excessive exposure can dehydrate and scorch the leaves, causing them to pale or burn. For optimal growth, many plants, including Nagbettai, thrive in partial shade, where they can balance light and shade for healthy development.
Nagbettai is a robust, evergreen species with stems that can grow up to 25 meters, commonly harvested for furniture-making and basketry. The department’s dedicated efforts reflect a commitment to ensuring the survival and growth of these valuable saplings in their natural habitat. Sunlight filtering through the canopy is managed to provide around 40-50% exposure, a balance ideal for their stems to reach upwards while keeping the roots shaded.
The forest division of Sirsi, covering over 1.7 lakh hectares, including Betta lands, remains committed to preserving biodiversity and nurturing such vital plant species.
