A 29-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death by his father during a late-night quarrel in Anegundi village of Mudigere taluk in Chikkamagaluru district, police said on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Pradeep Achar. Police said the incident occurred on Saturday night at the family’s residence following a heated argument between Pradeep and his father, Ramesh Achar. Ramesh was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Frequent disputes led to tragedy

According to police officials, both the father and son were habitual drinkers and were frequently involved in arguments at home. Due to persistent domestic disputes, Pradeep’s mother had reportedly shifted to her parental home some time ago.

On the night of the incident, the argument escalated, during which Ramesh allegedly attacked Pradeep with a sickle. Pradeep sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.

Neighbours became aware of the incident only on Sunday morning and immediately informed the police.

Accused arrested, probe underway

Personnel from Balooru Police rushed to the spot, conducted a preliminary inspection and shifted the body for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and the accused has been arrested.

Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events and circumstances leading to the assault.

The incident has shocked residents of the village and once again highlighted concerns over alcohol abuse and domestic violence in rural areas.
