Mullayyanagiri and Chandradrona Hill Ranges Identified as Danger Zones by GSI
CHIKKAMAGALURU: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has designated the Mullayyanagiri and Chandradrona hill ranges, along with Charmady Ghat, as danger zones following a recent survey aimed at assessing landslide risks in Chikkamagaluru district.
In light of the tragic landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad region, the state government mandated local authorities to identify areas susceptible to natural disasters like landslides and floods. Consequently, the district administration identified 77 disaster-prone locations and submitted their findings to the government.
In August, a GSI team visited key areas, including Mullayyanagiri, Datta Peeta, and the Chandradrona hill ranges, to investigate the underlying causes of recent landslides and flooding. Their report highlighted that these disasters were largely due to “mindless and unscientific” development practices in this eco-sensitive region. As a precaution, the report recommended prohibiting the movement of heavy vehicles in the Mullayyanagiri and Chandradrona ranges to mitigate further risks.
