A tragic incident in Holalkere, Chitradurga district, has brought attention to the damaging impact of rumours and harassment within academic spaces, after a young Ayurvedic doctor allegedly died by suicide.

Dr MU Nikitha (23), a resident of Basava Layout, was found dead in her room on Wednesday afternoon. The incident came to light later that night, prompting immediate police action.

Death note points to harassment

A note recovered from the scene revealed that Nikitha had been facing harassment from fellow students and the wife of a lecturer. She stated that false rumours were spread linking her to the lecturer, which caused her immense distress.

Nikitha clarified that she had only approached the lecturer for academic guidance during her training, but her classmates allegedly misinterpreted this and subjected her to taunts and humiliation.

Emotional distress and isolation

According to the note, continuous harassment and social stigma deeply affected her mental well-being. She attributed her extreme step to the pressure and emotional trauma caused by the situation.

The incident highlights the severe consequences of unchecked rumours and peer harassment in educational institutions.

Case registered, probe underway

The Karnataka Police have registered a case against the lecturer, his wife, and several students named in the note. Authorities have begun a detailed investigation to ascertain the facts and take appropriate action.

Urgent need for safe academic spaces

The case underscores the need for stronger anti-harassment policies, counselling support, and awareness within educational institutions to prevent such tragedies.

Creating a culture of respect and timely intervention is crucial to safeguarding students’ mental health and dignity.
