Vani Vilas Sagar Reservoir Reaches Full Capacity for Third Time in 115 Years
Chitradurga: The Vani Vilas Sagar reservoir, located in Chitradurga district, has reached its maximum capacity of 30 TMCft for the third time in its 115-year history. This marks a hopeful moment for locals and farmers, especially after last year’s water shortages. The significant rainfall in the Bhadra River catchment area, coupled with water discharge from the Bhadra reservoir, has contributed to this achievement.
Historically, the reservoir first overflowed in 1933 and again in 2022, after 89 years. This year’s filling was due to 600 cusecs of water being lifted from the Bhadra reservoir, resulting in minimal spillway overflow. In contrast, previous overflows were triggered by much higher inflows, with 3,000 cusecs in 2022.
The Vani Vilas Sagar dam supports irrigation for over 100,000 hectares in Hiriyur taluk and provides drinking water to the regions of Hiriyur, Hosadurga, Chitradurga, and Challakere. The recent inflow has alleviated the worries of local farmers, ensuring a steady water supply for agriculture and domestic use.
Farmers and locals are now hopeful that this abundance will continue into the coming summer months. In recognition of this rare event, the district plans a Ganga puja and bagina ceremony on January 18, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, with residents of Hiriyur taluk expected to join in.
