Class 10 Dropout Thrives with Rs 1 Crore Business in Exotic Fruits
Lohith Shetty, a class 10 dropout from Dakshina Kannada, defied expectations by building a thriving business cultivating exotic fruits like rambutan, dragon fruit, and mangosteen, generating over Rs 1 crore annually. Financial hardships forced Lohith to leave school, leading him to explore various jobs before discovering his passion for farming.
In 2006, after realizing that traditional crops like rubber and areca nut were no longer profitable, Lohith began experimenting with exotic fruits. Starting with saplings from Kerala, he gradually mastered cultivation techniques. After returning to his hometown in 2016, Lohith expanded his operations by leasing 20 acres, adding to his family’s 21-acre farm.
Today, Lohith cultivates rambutan on 12 acres, manages 500 dragon fruit plants, and integrates mangosteen within his areca nut plantation. Beyond personal success, he shares his knowledge, helping other farmers establish their own fruit farms. Selling rambutan at Rs 180-300/kg, mangosteen at Rs 350-750/kg, and dragon fruit at Rs 100-150/kg, he continues to support local agriculture while making a mark in the exotic fruit market.
