Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has warned that the Karnataka government will initiate strict legal action against those spreading fake news. Speaking at the district journalists’ association’s Press Day and award function in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah highlighted the detrimental impact of misinformation, citing a recent example where a quote he made in the assembly was distorted. He had referenced a statement by former CM BS Yediyurappa, who asked, “Do we have a printing machine to print currency to waive loans?” However, on social media, this statement was falsely attributed to Siddaramaiah, linking it to the state’s guarantee schemes.
The CM emphasized that this misinformation not only misled the public but also caused harm to society at large. “Misinformation is dangerous—it can damage reputations and spread confusion,” he remarked. Siddaramaiah stressed the importance of tackling fake news, which has the potential to erode public trust in governance.
He acknowledged that while Karnataka has enacted strict laws to punish those who propagate false information, legislation alone is insufficient. “Simply having laws won’t prevent fake news. It’s vital for society to take a stand against it,” he added.
In response to the growing threat of fake news, the government has set up special fact-check units in every district to identify and debunk false information. The CM further stressed that freedom of expression, a core constitutional right, must be protected from the dangers posed by fake news, ensuring the safety of democratic institutions.
