Shopkeeper who immolated self to save shop dies; Bhatkal tense

Bhatkal: A shopkeeper who protested against the eviction orders of local Town Municipal Council (TMC) died of severe burns last night after he immolated self on the previous day. The situation in the town turned tense following his death.

The body of deceased merchant Ramachandra Nayak was brought to Bhatkal this morning amid police bundobust. Local administration declared holiday today for schools and colleges in the town to prevent untoward incidents.

Shopkeepers protested on Thursday against the sudden decision of the town council to evict 34 shops, which according to TMC were illegal. Angered by the decision, they pelted stones at the town municipal council office that day.

Following the orders of Deputy Commissioner, the town council authorities went ahead with the eviction of shops .Opposing TMC’s decision, Ramachandra Nayak set self on fire while attempting suicide. His brother Ishwar Nayak, who went to rescue him, was also injured in the incident. Enraged by the incident, people succeeded in stopping the eviction operation on that day.

Unfortunately, Ramacahndra Nayak failed to recover from severe burns and died.
