Karwar: The Forest Department of Uttara Kannada district’s Karwar has undertaken up a project to plant a total of 13.74 lakh trees this year. They will be carrying out the project in colaboration with the general public.
Karwar’s forest department came into existence in 1943 and covers 1,370.74 square kilometres of area with 129 villages of Ankola.
It currently has six nurseries in Karwar where they grow mango, jackfruit, teak and other endemic tree saplings. The teak saplings will be supplied to the general public at a nominal rate of Rs 1 per plant and the other saplings will be supplied at Rs 3 per plant.
If the farmers nurture these trees for three years, they will be paid Rs 100 per tree at various stages of its growth under the forest encouragement project.
Speaking about the initiative, DFO, Vasanth Reddy informed that the plants are ready to be distributed to the school students and the public.
