Karwar: Illegally extracted sand seized in Siddara

Karwar: Acting on a tip-off about illegal sand mining in Kali backwaters at Siddara in taluk, the officials of the Mines and Geology Department conducted a raid and seized the sand. Illegal sand mining is going on in the backwaters on various sides of the Kali River. Based on the information, officials of the Mines and Geology Department are conducting raids. Accordingly, around 30 metric tonnes of sand was removed from Kali River at Siddara in the Taluk during the night.

Asha, an officer of the department who conducted the raid, seized the sand from the spot. Sand extraction is not allowed in Kali River here. However, there are allegations that sand is being removed unauthorisedly day and night.

The Officials of the Mines and Geology Department are taking steps to stop illegal sand mining despite a shortage of staff.
