Karwar: Indian Coast Guard Ship Shoor had its maiden entry to the Port of Karwar June 10, after completion of successful rescue operation of MT Infinity-1.
Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Shoor’ at Port of Karwar
ICGS Shoor, a 105 meters off-shore patrol vessel fitted with advanced navigational and communication equipment, was commissioned on 11 April 2016 and is based at Mangalore.
ICGS Shoor was tasked on an urgent rescue operation of Motor Tanker Infinity-1 at 0905 PM on June 8. The tanker was listed to its right side and sinking due to ingress of seawater. ICGS Shoor sailed out within half an hour of the notice and reached the distressed tanker at 1100 PM. Thereafter, the ship dispatched its Specialist Damage Control Team to MT Infinity-1 and undertook de-flooding operation continuously for 35 hours in rough sea conditions and high wind speeds including the night time.
MT Infinity-1 was brought safely to Karwar Port June 10 along with its 14 crew members and cargo with the valiant efforts of the ship’s Damage Control Team and watchful eyes of ICGS Shoor, which remained in the vicinity of the distressed Tanker.
ICGS Shoor has maximum speed of 23 knots and endurance of 6000 nautical miles. The state-of-art ship has the capability to perform the role of a Command Platform and accomplish multi-mission tasks at sea like Search and Rescue, Pollution Control, Law Enforcement and Medical Evacuation etc. The presence of ICGS Shoor has provided an impetus to the maritime protection of the Western Seaboard especially, the State of Karnataka. In order to augment the force levels in Karnataka, Indian Coast Guard has planned to base a Shoor class OPV at Karwar in future.
