Karwar: He lost his right hand 20 years ago when a wall collapsed on him while he was at work at a construction site. But he triumphed over his physical disability and decided to support his poverty-sticken family and be independent.

This is the story of Jagadeesha B Kurthakoti from Kamadola in Dharwad. Seeing the economically poor condition of his family, young Jagadeesha decided to take up construction work 20 years ago. But tragedy struck when he lost his right hand after a construction wall collapsed. Doctors tried their best to fix his hand, but all their efforts were for naught.

Where such a tragedy would have left many dejected, the accident did not stop Jagadeesha. Jagadeesha moved to Karwar 14 years ago, after his friends advised him to do so. He found work at a hotel after looking for a job. Out of compasion, a hotel owner gave him a job as a cashier . “It made me self-reliant and helped me lead a dignified life,” says Jagadeesha.

Jagadeesha begins his work at 6 am and continues working till 11 pm. Apart from his cashier job at the hotel, he delivers things like milk, paper etc., to various shops in the town every day while riding a bicycle (with one hand), and travels over 10 km daily as he does so.

Jagadeesha is certainly a role model and an inspiration to those who often get dejected and their dreams shattered due to the loss of their limbs or any other physical disability.
