Karwar: The Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will be attending the massive fishermen’s convention in Kumta during the latter half of November to coincide with the World Fisheries Day, confirmed U R Sabhapathy, the Karnataka Fishermen’s Congress President.
The central government has stalled many benefits given to fishermen given in the past, alleged Sabhapathy addressing a press conference here on October 21 and added the convention would demand loan waiver for fishermen in similar lines to that of farmers.
Around 60,000-1 lakh fishermen are expected to take part in the convention and it will oppose Centre’s move of axing subsidies on diesel supplied to fishermen, Sabhapathy reiterated.
The other demands include scheduled tribe tag for fishermen and a separate cabinet portfolio for fisheries to avoid neglect, delinking it from the agricultural ministry.
