Karwar: “Provoking messages circulated on social media have enraged the people and hence the protests turned violent, said IGP West Hemanth Nimbalkar here on December 12.

Speaking to reporters, Nimbalkar said, “The miscreants attacked our driver and attempted to murder him. Due to some of the rumours spread on social media the situation went out of control.”

“There is a deliberate attempt to divide two particular communities by spreading false information. The rumours spread about the injury marks on the dead youth’s body are false. Doctors who performed the autopsy, found no evidence of assault or any mutilation, including castration, or any injury due to chemicals. The man’s face was discoloured not because of burns but because of decay,” he said.

“We will initiate action as per law against those responsible for violence and have abetted communal incidences in Uttara Kannada. A physical education teacher Timmappavar Nayak (43) has been arrested for spreading rumours on the alleged torture on Whatsapp, “ he added.

Earlier BJP lawmaker Shobha Karandlaje had tweeted that he had been castrated, his head was cut open and boiling oil was poured on his face before he was thrown into the lake.

The body of Paresh Mesta (21) was found in a lake on December 8 night, two days after he went missing during the clashes in the town in Uttara Kannada district.
