Mangaluru: Jayantha, a 28-year-old youth who was bedridden for the past 8 years due to the “Ankylosing Spondylitis”, got a new lease of life after a rare Hip Replacement Surgery here at in Yenepoya Hospital.

A resident of Kadaba, Jayantha lost his locomotion while he was pursuing his 12th standard due to Ankylosing Spondylitis which is a rare kind of arthritis found in 0.1 percent to 0.5 percent of the population. Due to this condition, his spinal column and hips joints failed completely leading to complete loss of movement and he was bedridden for 8 years by discontinuing the education.

Deepak Rai, Chief Orthopedic Surgeon, in a press meet on February 6, said “Both the hips joints of Jayantha were fused with complete loss of movement. He was suffering from intolerable pain in both the hips and was leading a miserable life and confined to the bed. Day by day his condition worsened. There was no option but to undergo replacement surgery of both the hips to help him regain his mobility and functional abilities. And helping him to get rid of the excruciating pain was the primary objective of surgery.” The doctor also confirmed that the surgery was done for the first time in Mangaluru.

Dual Mobility Hip System

“Dual Mobility Hip System addresses the challenges with conventional hip systems. It is specially designed to relieve pain, enhance stability and improve the range of motion, for the patients suffering from severe hip joint disorder. This hip has two articulating surfaces which allows the patient a far more mobility than a conventional hip. It is much more improved than the standard implants, in terms of wider range of motion. Its unique design offers better stability and less wear and tear, thereby reducing the chances of cup failures considerably. The hip system is also combined with patented X3 Technology. X3 is the first highly cross-linked polyethylene that resists the effects of wear, provides high level of strength and a long lasting implant. Dual mobility is an excellent option for young patients with a long active life span of 40-50 years ahead”, Dr. Rai further added.

Speaking on the occasion Jayantha said, “My life has completely changed. I was bedridden for several years due to Ankylosing Spondylitis. But Dr. Deepak has come as a God in my life to overcome the illness. Now I can walk like everyone. I thank Dr. Deepak Rai and Yenepoya Hospital.”

He also informed that after two months of the surgery he could walk.

Jayantha’s brother Gangadhar thanked the hospital for the successful surgery.

Dr. Muhammed Thahir and others were present during the press meet.
