Mangaluru: After a special drive against the use of shrill horns by buses, the Mangaluru Traffic police has, on Wednesday, October 17, launched another special drive, this time it’s against the use of ‘no parking’ boards which are put up in front of business establishments in the city.

During this special drive, the traffic police removed 55 boards and collected a penalty of Rs 5,500 from the erring business owners. As busniess owners in the city put ‘no parking’ boards in front of their shops, customers find it difficult to find a place to park their vehicles, hence they have no other choice but to park their vehicles on the road. The business owners also employ security guards to ensure that only their customers park their vehicles in front of their shops.

Though it is mandatory for buildings to reserve sufficient paking space for vehicles, some are in violation of these guidelines. Due to this, callers during the weekly phone-in programme of police, complained that several commercial complexes are forcing visitors to park their vehicles on the road and sought strict action against such buildings.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Uma Prashanth informed that there were repeated complaints with regard to the ‘no parking’ boards put in front of shops. Hence, this special drive was organised. “A notice was served to the shop owners and a penalty of Rs 100 was collected from each of them. We have also served a notice to them warning them against repeating the same,” she said.
