Mangaluru: The annual ban on deep sea fishing using mechanized and traditional boats to allow fish to breed, began in coastal belt on May 31 midnight. It will continue upto July 31st.
Following the ban order, fishermen have already started returning with their trawlers, long-liners and other mechanized vessels to the shore and have anchored them at the fishing ports.
During the ban period, fishermen generally go for traditional fishing where they will be able to fetch the income of some 30 days. Under Coastal Fishing (Regulation) Act 1986, the ban on fishing has been enforced in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts.
Currently Dakshina Kannada district consists 21 fishing villages with 35,000 fishermen families living in it. The district consists 845 mechanised boats (trawler and purse seine), 1109 motor boats and 400 traditional boats.
