Mangaluru: A moving case was witnessed at the Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH), where an aged nun donated her kidney to a younger nun.

According to sources, Ursaline nun Sr Irene Laldinmawii was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Upon hearing this, 66-year-old Sr Aurea D’Souza of the Holy Rosary Convent in Jeppu, decided to donate her kidney to Sr Irene.

Sr Aurea was the latter’s teacher.

Sr Irene’s ailment required an allograft procedure for a kidney transplant. A team of doctors tirelessly worked on precise documentation and verification before the procedure.

Members of the state-level Human Organ Transplantation Committee in Bengaluru, who were running the verification, lauded Sr Aurea’s generosity.

Both the nuns were discharged on March 6. The transplant was performed on February 16.

In a press release, Father Muller Charitable Institutions Director Fr Richard A Coelho stated that this kidney transplant, and another that occurred a few days ago (a mother donated her kidney to her son), was was success because of the coordinated efforts of Dr Manjunah Shetty (urologist), Dr Manjunath J (nephrologist) and a team of anaesthetists, technicians and transplant coordinators.
