72-year-old Mohini Shettigar conferred with Uttama Nekara award

Mangaluru: Mohini Shettigar was conferred with the ‘Uttama Nekara’ award by the Kadike Trust, Karkala at Talipady Weavers Society on Thursday.

The Kadike Trust presented this award as part of its campaign, ‘Save Udupi Saree’.

Mohini Shettigar (72) has been weaving Udupi sarees for the past 52 years.

Sanjeeva Shettigar, one of the seven weavers of the 80 count Udupi sarees in the twin districts, was also honoured on the occasion. He is weaving naturally dyed 80 count butta sarees for the first time in the recent history the Udupi saree. He has returned to weaving after a break of six years due to the joint efforts of ‘Save Udupi saree’ by Kadike Trust and the Talipady Weavers Society.

The weavers and assistant weavers, along with the staff of Talipady Weavers Society, were honoured with incentives by the Kadike Trust during the programme.

Trustees of the Kadike Trust, office bearers and members of the Talipady Weavers Society and well-wishers of handloom industry were present.
