72nd Independence Day observed with gaiety and patriotic fervour in DK

Mangaluru: The 72nd Independence Day was celebrated with all gaiety and patriotic fervour, here at Nehru Maidan on Wednesday, August 15.

Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister U T Khader unfurled the tri-colours and received the guard of honour. Delivering the Independence Day message, Khader recalled the contributions and sacrifices of the freedom fighters and soldiers for the nation.

Khader also spoke about the various schemes initiated by the coalition government in the state. “The district administration is all set to start the Indian Coast Guard’s National Academy in Dakshina Kannada. The government has plans to extend the runway at the Mangaluru International Airport,” he said.

The highlights of Khader’s speech:

  • Out of the 98,593 applications for land ownership received from Dakshina Kannada, the government has disposed of 83,007 of them.
  • A total of 8750 farmers have registered under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
  • The concretisation of Shiradi Ghat road, at a cost of Rs 74 Crore, has been completed.
  • For the year 2017-18, the Department of Tourism in the state has sanctioned 23 developmental works.
  • The government has given approval for 32 villages under the Chief Minister Gram Vikas Yojana and allotted Rs 32 Crore for the project, out of which Rs 11.80 Crore has been already sanctioned.
  • Under E-Kshana Yojane, the government has distributed 81,213 certificates including caste certificate, title deeds and income certificates.
  • The government has implemented “Arogya Karnataka Yojane” from June 1, 2018, and nearly 191 patients have availed treatment of Rs 121.96 Lakh.
  • The government has established the Gelathi-Special Treatment Units at all the taluks in the district.
  • The government has given the ministerial approval for the construction of 11 check dams under Paschimavahini Project at a cost of Rs 265.25 Crore. The work will begin soon after the monsoon.
  • For the year 2018-19, the government has released Rs 3229.64 Lakh under National Rural Drinking Water Project and already spent Rs 995.90 Lakh. It has also sanctioned Multivillage Drinking Water project for seven villages. The projects at Kinnigoli, Malavooru, Korapadi and Sangabettu have been completed.

The NCC Air Force Wing (Senior) secured first and the NCC Naval Wing (Senior) secured second place in the march past held on the occasion.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, Commissioner of Police T R Suresh, Superintendent of Police Dr. B R Ravikanthe Gowda and others were present.
