A J Hospital conducts its first bone marrow transplant

Mangaluru: The A J Hospital in City has conducted its first bone marrow transplant.

A 55-year-old male patient from Uttara Kannada who was suffering from severe backache was admitted to the hospital after his bone marrow was in remission due to cancer. He was diagnosed to have multiple myeloma, a type of blood related cancer, which spreads to bones and makes them weak.

The patient received high dose induction chemotherapy for 4 months followed by ‘Autologous Bone Marrow transplant.’

Autologous bone marrow transplant involves three major steps, stem cell collection, high dose chemotherapy and stem cell transfusion. The patient received growth factors for four days and then his stem cells were harvested. The stem cells collected previously were transfused on the next day. He was managed in sterile HEPA filter Positive Press Ventilation room till he recovered.

A J Hospital is the only hospital in Mangaluru providing comprehensive transplant facilities such as kidney, liver as well as bone marrow transplantation and has state-of-the-art transplant facilities.

Dr. Rachan Shetty, MD, DM, MRCP (in Oncology), UK, London and his team have successfully conducted the first bone marrow transplant of A J Hospital.
