Mangaluru: A team of specialist inspectors headed by Investigating Officer ACP (Crime) K Thilakchandra was deployed to probe the twin murder at Mangaluru district sub-jail on Monday, November 2, Additional Director General of Police Alok Mohan said.
Addressing the media at the Commissioner’s Office on Tuesday, November 3, Mohan said that at the moment, it could only be confirmed that a knife was used in the murders as they have not recovered any weapon from the jail premises. He informed that five people have been listed in the case so far and that they were eyeing on more hands behind the execution of the murder.
When asked about the involvement of underworld fugitive Vicky Shetty in the case, Mohan said that the possibility could not be ruled out adding that they are considering that particular angle on a serious note. He sought for some more time to reach the root of the case.
No CCTV cameras in jail
In what can be termed as a matter of negligence, the old jail has no CCTV cameras installed. When asked about this, Mohan said that the Police Department could not be held responsible for that, as the Prison Department is isolated from it and there were officers dedicated to administer the prison.
The police are currently assuming that weapons might have been thrown into the campus from a tree rooted outside the jail premises with one branch spread towards the jail compound.
Unbiased probe
Early in the day, an under-trial had informed the media that the cops in the prison had supplied murder weapons. When asked, Mohan maintained that an unbiased probe will be conducted and suitable action will be taken against the culprits. He assured that action will be taken even against the cops if the department finds them at fault.
