Mangaluru: A member of National Environment Care Foundation – Daniel Tauro along with three others have stood up against the Dakshina Kannada district administration plan to chop down around 500 trees to build an administration complex.  Along with him, the residents of Karnataka Forest Industries Corporation and environmentalists have opposed the felling of trees in the Padil area proposed for the district office complex.

The group have filed a writ petition challenging the November 14, 2014 government order of handing over 5.89 acres of KSFIC land to the Revenue Department. However the petition is pending before a Division Bench. It is slated to come up for hearing after vacation, Mr. Tauro informed.

Addressing a press meet on Tuesday May 19  Tauro said as many 478 trees including sandalwood are present in the  area proposed for the district complex. There are toddy cats (Beru), bats and local birds in this area. “We cannot damage this green area,” he said. Tauro urged that the area must be designated as a deemed forest, as it has all the characteristics to be called one.

Tauro also said that the transfer order of the land from the KSFIC to the Revenue Department, was issued much before the Cabinet decision on construction of the district complex in April, which is illegal, added Tauro.
