During an event held in observance of International Women’s Day and World Hearing Day at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath, District Health Officer Dr. Thimmaiah HR expressed concern over the decreasing sex ratio in Dakshina Kannada district. He emphasized the urgent need for heightened awareness to combat female foeticide.
Dr. Thimmaiah highlighted that Dakshina Kannada currently has a sex ratio of 956 women per 1,000 men, a statistic that raises concerns and warrants improvement. He stressed the importance of changing the prevailing preference for boys in families, emphasizing that a stable society is achievable through gender balance, which can be fostered through awareness initiatives. Dr. Thimmaiah called for a shift in people’s mindset, expressing his concern over reported cases of female foeticide.
Dr. Jacintha D’Souza, the District Medical Officer and Medical Superintendent of Wenlock District Hospital, addressed the significance of World Hearing Day during the event. She underscored the need to raise awareness about hearing loss and emphasized that early detection of symptoms in newborns can contribute to treating potential hearing impairments.
