Mangaluru: A large section of Mangalureans and some people from across the country and abroad are coming to the aid of the families of the two people who were killed in the police firing in the city after the anti-CAA protests took a turn for the worse.
It can be recalled that last month, within 48 hours after announcing ex gratia of Rs 10 lakhs to the families of each of the persons who were killed in the police firing, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa withheld the amount citing the victims’ inclusion as accused in the FIR filed by the Mangaluru city police in connection with the violence that broke out on December 19, 2019. According to the government, the compensation will be released once the deceased are cleared of any wrongdoing.
According to sources, people have pooled in money for the families of the two who were killed in the police firing as well as for those who were injured in the incident. The donors were reportedly shocked by the state government’s decision to withdraw the aid after the announcement of the same, making them take the cause up more aggressively.
While having confirmed the news that donors are coming forward to help those affected, former Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddin Bava has not revealed the exact amount of money donated till date. The pooled amount, according to the Congress leader, will be disbursed to the families of the two persons who were killed in the police firing, Jaleel and Nausheen, and to those who were injured.
