Assembly polls: In a first, 41 transgenders to cast votes

Mangaluru: As the Election Commission of India announced that Karnataka will go for the polls on May 12, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil announced the model code of conduct will be effectively implemented from Tuesday March 27.

Addressing a press meet, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil said that the district administration is all set to observe free and fair elections. The process of examining the electronic voting machines have been done.

“There is an11% increase in the total number of voters in the district compared to 2013. There were 15,01,024 voters in 2013. In 2018 there are 16,67,194 voters in the district. For the first time 41 transgenders will caste their votes in up coming elections”, the DC said.

“In eight assembly constituencies, 1858 polling stations will be setup. A total of 68 additional polling stations have been set up as compared to 2013. Auxiliary polling stations have been set up where the number of voters are more than 1300 in rural areas and 1400 in urban areas” he said.

He also that the district administration has reviewed all electronic voting machines. There are 2787 ballot units, 2322 control units and 2415 VVPAT are ready for the elections.

To prevent the violation of model code of conduct, 24 model code of conduct teams, 26 surveillance teams, 26 flying squads and 24 check posts.

He also said that the state elections commission has declared Bantwal and Mangaluru North constituency as ‘expensive-sensitive’.
