Mangaluru: An autorickshaw driver lost Rs. 5,000 after a passenger duped him by assuring him of subsidy from the Social Welfare Department at Sullia in Dakshina Kannada District. Victiom, Guddappa Rai, filed a complaint with the Sullia Police station with regard to the fraud.
As per the complaint, a person hired Guddppa’s autorickshaw near the bus stand, and on the way during a telephonic conversation passenger brought the topic of helping to provide Rs. 50,000 subsidy. Overhearing the conversation, Guddappa inquired the passenger about the subsidy.
Stating that any poor family can receive the Rs. 50,000 subsidy from the government by filing an application and paying Rs. 5,000 as fees, he also added that it was the last day to send the application and assured to help auto driver.
Guddappa promptly withdrew Rs. 5,000 from his account, and gave it to the stranger along with copies of required documents. Then the duo travelled to Puttur, and the stranger alighted at a government office not to return.
When the stranger did not return, Guddappa grew suspicious and went to the office and made inquiries, and got to know he was duped.
