In a distressing turn of events, an autorickshaw driver from Bantwal has fallen prey to an online scam, resulting in a loss of Rs 4.7 lakh to fraudsters. The 33-year-old driver raised concerns about the incident, which unfolded after he received a WhatsApp message in December last year from an unknown individual.
Deceptive Scheme Unfolds
The message, enticing the driver with promises of high investment returns, urged him to download an application called ‘NumGenius A1 APP.’ Trusting the information provided, the driver proceeded to invest money in multiple phases, utilizing different bank accounts for the transactions. In total, he allegedly invested Rs 5.9 lakh.
False Sense of Security
Initially, the scammers returned Rs 1.2 lakh to the victim, creating a false sense of security and legitimacy. However, suspicions arose when the driver was unable to retrieve the remaining funds. Realizing he had fallen victim to a fraudulent operation, the driver took the decision to file a police complaint.
