Mangaluru: The district administration has declared the electrical crematorium at Boloor as the official cremation site for COVID-19 victims in the district.
This development comes close on the heels of locals opposing the cremation of two COVID-19 victims at certain crematoriums in the district.
District Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said that the Boloor crematorium is the only electrical crematorium in the entire district and that it is the nearest to the Wenlock Hospital. Hence, the district administration has decided to perform the final rites of the COVID-19 victims here itself.
She added that the electrical crematorium will also be opened for non-COVID-19 deaths.
Meanwhile, the DC clarified that the relatives of COVID-19 victims are free to conduct the final rites as per their customs and traditions. However, it should be done as per the guidelines issued by the health department.
Usually, the family members and relatives of COVID-19 victims will be under treatment as they are the primary contacts. Therefore, they ask the district administration to carry out the final rites on their behalf. In such cases only, the district administration will conduct the last rites at the Boloor crematorium, she said.
